September 2013

September was the month that Eliza discovered Mickey Mouse. We went to our neighbor Daniel’s 3rd birthday party and Mickey was the theme and Eliza has been obsessed with both Mickey and Minnie since. It is so cute to watch her excitement when she sees them on TV or sees the dolls in stores. I guess Disneyland will have to be on our travel list for the future. We will probably wait until she is a little older.

One funny story from this month is that I put her to bed one night without her pants on and I woke up to her standing in her crib half naked swinging the diaper around over her head. It was pretty hilarious and I was relieved to find that she had only peed or it would have been a huge mess. Whew!

The biggest thing for September was our trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan for my cousin Tony’s wedding. I was excited to go so that Eliza could meet the rest of my mom’s side of the family. Andy was not able to go and Eliza and I traveled alone. Let’s just say that it was everything that I expected about traveling with a toddler and maybe a little worse. She was scared of my entire family since they were all new and she wouldn’t go to anyone so I had to basically hold her the entire time. We shared a hotel room with my mom and Eliza would cry for me if she was in the pack and play and then would want to play when I put her in bed with me rather than sleep so it was just a nightmare.

Traveling on the plane wasn’t much better. When Eliza realized that she was going to have to sit on my lap for the flights home and didn’t have her own seat, she threw a huge screaming fit because she was mad that she wasn’t going to get to wear a seat belt. Luckily, a nice flight attendant heard her wails and loaned her the seat belt that they use when they do the safety demo at the beginning of the flight. Eliza wore that thing around her waist for the entire 4.5 hour flight from Detroit to Phoenix. Sigh.

Regardless, I was happy to get to go to my cousin’s wedding and happy that Eliza got to meet my aunts, uncles and cousins and my grandma Pentz. She did have fun talking to everyone as long as  I was holding her so it we ever go again when she is older, maybe she will be more comfortable. She also got to see my dad’s side of the family who hadn’t seen her since we were in Houston when she was 2 months old so that was nice. She also picked apples from the apple tree in Aunt Ruth’s backyard and then ate them and she really loved that. It will definitely be a fun memory.

August 2013

August was another busy summer month. Andy was out of town the first weekend in August and Eliza and I had a lot of plans. The first Saturday in August I took her to music class, came home for a nap, took her to SF to see my friend Lisa who was in town and then drove down to Sunnyvale for Seth’s annual BBQ. Whew! That was a busy day. But Eliza has been such a laid back and go with the flow baby that it has been easy to do all of these things on occasion. That Sunday we only had one thing to do- go to a birthday party for Nicholas in Golden Gate Park. Eliza had a fun time running around and playing in the bubbles. The following weekend we went to Sacramento to see our friends Phil and Jill and their sons Jason and Seth.

Eliza continues to talk more and more and amaze us with all that she knows. She loves her Saturday morning music class that she took all summer and loves singing to the CD when we are in the car.

Some other musings:

One morning she heard Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and called it “Hey Hey Good Girl.”

We also started calling Eliza the salmon monster. If we don’t have salmon on hand at all times then she gets really upset throws a temper tantrum.

Eliza loved to ride “BARK” into the city. She was really concerned when it got dark when we went into the tunnels.

Since I was going to travel alone with Eliza in September, we decided to do Operation Bye Bye Bottles over Labor Day Weekend and just stop bottles cold turkey and go straight to the sippy cup. It ended up being easier than we thought. After nearly 2 hours of screaming and tantrums she finally took the sippy cup and hasn’t looked back!
