January 2015

January started out with a trip to Train Town in Sonoma to meet my friend Megan, her husband Jim, and daughter Kelsey for a fun day. After Train Town we went down to the downtown Square in Sonoma and had a picnic lunch and the girls played at the park. It was a fun day.

The next day we went to the horse races to celebrate Andy’s birthday. It was a fun day although we didn’t do so well with our bets.

For MLK weekend we went to Sonoma again to celebrate Andy’s friend Dan’s birthday. He had invited a few friends and their families to their new house in Sonoma. It is an amazing place and we had such a good weekend. It was even warm enough for us to swim. In January! We stayed overnight and it was just a great weekend.

Later in January Eliza went to the dentist for the second time but got her first cleaning. She was so good and I was so proud of her!

Funny Eliza sayings and doings this month:

While walking through the grocery aisles at Target Eliza kept repeating “Mommy, I really don’t like beer. It just doesn’t taste good.”

Don’t touch me. I’m hibernating.

I have set up a sleepover party and I would like to invite Daniel, Emily, Kolton, Ben, Summer and Sophia. This is my playdate and they can watch me do amazing tricks

Eliza told me that she should be able to wear her necklace to bed because Sofia the First wears her amulet to bed.

Eliza locked me in my room while I was taking a shower and locked herself into her bathroom. Andy finally rescued her when she wouldn’t stop pounding on the door because I didn’t hear anything in the shower.

December 2014

This month started out with getting Eliza’s first school pictures. Ok, they are BEYOND adorable. BEYOND. And I am not just saying that because I am her mother. You can see them below with all of the other pictures. And because she was scared at first they let her take a picture with Andy and that is a freaking adorable picture as well. I want these pictures displayed forever!!!

The first weekend in December Eliza was invited to her friend Summer’s house for a Teddy Bear Tea. I had never heard of that before but apparently it is a popular thing to do with kids. She had fun with her friends and we got some cute pictures.

Her school also had a cute little Christmas program and I was happy to go to that and see her sing with her friends.

We went to Dell’Osso family farm and road the train and saw the lights and had a fun time. We also observed Hanukkah this year. We never have before but Eliza is starting to understand more and I thought it might be a good Jewish holiday to get started with. She loved lighting the candles every night, although the first night she told me that she was afraid that the menorah was going to hurt her feelings. Haha!

We continued the Elf on the Shelf but apparently she was pissed anytime Snowflake, her elf, was playing on any of her toys. She would immediately take her off and put her on the table. So I guess the concept is still somewhat lost on her but at least she thinks she is watching her for good behavior!

As usual, we spent Christmas morning at home opening presents and then headed to Bob and Carole’s in the afternoon. We always have so much fun at their house and now it’s even more fun to have a little girl around to entertain us all.

After Christmas Eliza and I went to San Francisco one evening while Andy was playing volleyball and went to look at the Christmas lights. Of course we had to stop at the Disney Store too. We had so much fun and it was a great mommy/daughter bonding trip.

And on Christmas Eve we went to our friends kids New Years Eve party where we rang in the new year at noon. It was a lot of fun! We also decided to host our own New Years Eve party in the evening at our house and then celebrate the east coast new year at 9pm. We had a lot of fun and Eliza and her friends went crazy playing all over the house. Ahhh!

Christmas Eve Eve with the Golds!

Christmas Eve Eve with the Golds!

Some Eliza sayings this month:

She pooped in the potty and was so proud of it that she told us, “That looks like a holy crap. It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”

On our walk: a bit ago:
Eliza: That cute doggie has a tail.
Me: Do you have a tail?
Eliza: No. I have a vagina. I HAVE A VAGINA!
So glad 3 male neighbors were around to hear that. Sigh.

I JAMMED OUT when the song Bust a Move came on the radio. I thought Eliza was staring at me mesmerized at my ability to remember all the lyrics. But when the song was over she angrily proclaimed: You stole MY song that I’ve been singing since I was a little girl!!

I’m not in preschool. I’m in pajamas.

I have a secret: I like boobies.

Insists she is married to daddy. Does not like the fact that I’m married to daddy.

Dr. Office musings from Eliza:

Eww! I see poop!

I’m really sick.

I’m having so much fun at the doctor’s office.

Me: Eliza, let me read you a book
E: No, I don’t trust you

Nurse: I want to take you home.
Eliza: You can’t take me home. I belong to my mommy.

November 2014

November was another busy month for the Blair family. In early November we went to Tahoe for the weekend. It was a tradition that we started last year and I think we want to keep it up. It’s usually a very slow time of year and hotel rooms are like $49 a night. We like to stay at the MontBleu in South Lake Tahoe. And it is still our favorite thing to go to Basecamp Pizza and sit outside and listen to live music. We had a really nice weekend and I hope we can do this every year!

We had a nice Thanksgiving this year and it was a first because we actually hosted it at our house. We have never done that before. Andy’s parents were in town and so it was nice to have all of the Blair family over for the evening. Kevin and family had plans with Laura’s brother but they came by for dinner. I wish I would have gotten a picture of everyone but I forgot. Eliza had fun playing with her cousins and we had fun visiting with everyone.

The day after Thanksgiving Andy was off work and the weather was amazing so we took Eliza to Pixieland. Pixieland is a small amusement park for kids located in Concord. I’ve been taking Eliza on days when I have her home with me but Andy hadn’t been yet so it was nice to go as a family and have him ride some of the rides with her.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving we went on The Polar Express train ride for the first time. We went with Catherine, Chris, Ben and Jane and we had a really nice time. The kids dressed in their pajamas and we took a ride to the “North Pole” and got to see Santa and the elves and it was a fun time. Eliza loved it and we can’t wait to do it again next year.

And of course we did The Elf on the Shelf again this year. She made her appearance the day after Thanksgiving and Eliza was really excited. It was also a good behavior modification tool over the holidays to remind her that the elf was watching over her to report back to Santa. 🙂

A couple of Eliza sayings from this month:

After putting on 10 bracelets: “Mommy, how do you like my style?” How does she know this stuff??

I am so excited that I get a cupcake on Forgiveness Day (she meant Thanksgiving).

October 2014

Eliza started ballet in October. I had taken her to a free class at Tutu School here in Walnut Creek but at her preschool she was able to take ballet for free so we just went with that. My only regret is that because her school is so far away and Andy takes her, I didn’t get to see her during class at all. And for some reason they never did a recital so I missed out on all of the fun. Next time I will have to make sure she takes a local class!

Halloween with Eliza was SO much fun this year. She really got it and just loved dressing up. There seemed to be tons of Halloween parties throughout the month so she got good use of her costume. Speaking of her costume, we were at Gymboree one day and there was this dog with a tutu costume and since she likes dogs and tutus it was perfect for her! And I had all of these Gymboree coupons so I ended up getting her costume for a total of $17. I love a good deal, especially on things like a Halloween costume!

We went to a couple of pumpkin patches, Club Sport had a party and then on Halloween our neighborhood had their Halloween party. Our friends Sarah and Kurt came over with their kids Kolton and Iris and we took turns taking the kids trick or treating. We also ended up trick or treating with our neighbors Jen and Tim because Eliza loves their kids Daniel and Emily. Eliza and Daniel were literally sprinting between houses. They were just so excited to get some candy. Eliza knew that she couldn’t eat it but she sure had fun getting it. And of course at the end of the night she got a cupcake so she didn’t even care that she couldn’t eat her candy.

Eliza and I also made a lot of trips to Target in October. I have no idea why but I guess we just needed to go to the store a lot. Eliza just LOVES Target and gets so excited when we go there. Sometimes she will get a small treat from the $1 bins up front but most of the time she just loves to shop and look like the rest of us.

Here are a couple of fun videos from this month.

September 2014

One of Eliza’s big milestones in September was riding her tricycle around the neighborhood without help! She had started pedaling in August but in September she was able to ride around the entire neighborhood. She was super excited for this new milestone and it’s been fun to get out and about and enjoy the nice fall weather while she rides her bike around.

There was also a horseback riding playdate this month with one of the mom’s groups I belong to. Eliza got to go and groom horses and ride them. She was super serious when she was riding the horse and seemed like she was concentrating and wouldn’t let anyone joke with her. It was so funny. We may have a budding equestrian on our hands. We will see.

The third weekend in September we took a short family trip to Reno and stopped in Tahoe on the way there. I love the Lone Eagle Grille at the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village so we stopped there for lunch on our way to Tahoe. The restaurant is right by the beach and randomly we ran into our friend Tina and her mom and daughter Victoria. We played on the beach for a bit and then went back to have lunch.

We had a good time in Reno. Andy did a little gambling and Eliza enjoyed playing games and winning prizes at Circus Circus. We walked around Reno and tried some good restaurants and it was a nice getaway.

Later in the month my mom and Aunt Ruth came to visit for a few days in the middle of their California trip. We went to Muir Woods and Napa and had a really nice visit.

Another big thing was that I finally found some ice cream that Eliza can eat! With all of her food allergies, I didn’t think it was possible. But SO Delicious makes some coconut milk ice cream and she isn’t allergic to any of the ingredients. It is exciting to have that option when I need it in the future.

Eliza-isms for this month:

I love daddy SO MUCH. And I love you. And I love myself. And I love my doggie SO MUCH.

Eliza: I’m grumpy because I’m mad.
Me: Why are you mad?
Eliza: Because I don’t want turkey. I want ground beef.

August 2014

August was a busy but fun month. I signed Eliza up for a parent/child swimming lesson for a week and I was hoping that she would get more comfortable in the water. Well, the first day she did great and I was pleasantly surprised. On the second day, she ended up clinging to me for dear life screaming “Get me out, get me out” over and over. Later she told me “I don’t like the pool because it’s the pool.” We went 3 out of the 4 days because one day was really cold and I didn’t want to take her and then she was finished and got her certificate. After her last swim class she said “I am so happy now!”

Later in the month we decided to join the Renaissance Club Sport. It’s a gym with a pool and also a nice childcare area called Kids World. Eliza just loves it there. I have also been taking her to the pool a lot since many of our friends belong here as well. There is a lap pool, family pool, and kids pool. She would ask to go to the pool and then when we get there just sit in a chair and read a book. Seriously. It is so weird. But then we were there one day with her friend Summer and we didn’t have her bathing suit and hadn’t planned on swimming. But as soon as Summer and her mom got into the kids pool, Eliza wanted to get in too. She ended up loving it! So we spent most of the month of August going to the pool either on weekdays or weekends. It was fun and I was happy that she was finally enjoying the water!

Eliza was still loving school and we got into agood routine of doing fun things on her two days a week home with me. I think we both look forward to having that time together. It has been great for both of us!

Here are some funny things that Eliza said in August:

I have curly hair. Just like a sheep.

You’re not nasty.  You’re hilarious.

Eliza, please go downstairs with daddy. No, I’m here to save you!

Eliza is cracking me up today. She just told me that grammy’s other name is Mary Eli July.

July 2014 Part 2

Our vacation in early July was great for relaxing because life didn’t slow down after that. Two days after we got back, on July 10, Eliza started preschool at Andy’s school. She was SO EXCITED to go to school with daddy. Although she cried when she saw Andy the first couple of days, she got used to being there after a while and is now doing great! She goes to school with him on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is home with me on Wednesday and Friday. I feel like I have a great balance of time with her and time to myself. I work on the days she is in school and then we get to hang out and do fun things on the days that she is with me. And I do a little work when she naps. I really do feel like I have the best of both worlds!

And Eliza going to school also meant another milestone in her life. Potty training! After my disastrous try in June, I was shocked to find out that she went to the potty at school from day 1 without issue. At the beginning of August, they sent home most of her diapers and pull ups because she was doing so well that they didn’t think she needed them anymore. We still have to work out pooping on the potty as she either does that in her pants, waits until I put on a pull up when she goes to bed, or just cries in fear while she sits on the potty and poops. Poor thing. She at least knows to tell me she has to go but has a hard time actually doing it. She is definitely fully potty trained to go pee so that is a good thing.

Aside from that, Eliza has had a busy month.  On weekend we went to Folsom for my friend Courtney’s birthday pool party and we had a blast hanging out with everyone. She calls Courtney “Lady Gaga” and she also loved Courtney’s mom, whom we lovingly refer to as “Mama G.”  It was fun being able to bring her to an adult/kid party and seeing her have fun and interact with everyone. There were some older kids there and she loved watching them play in the pool but didn’t want to join.

We also went to Sacramento to celebrate Andy’s friend Phil’s 50th birthday party. Dan Gelfand and his family came up too and it was nice to be with old friends and their kids and have a good time.

Other than that, Eliza and I just had fun on our days together. We go to Small Talk Cafe where she likes to play dress up and play with other kids and toys. It’s a great place where I can relax and even get a little work done if I need to. We like to walk around Walnut Creek and enjoy being outdoors and “window shopping.” We went to get pedicures together and Eliza insisted that we both get the same color so our toes would look the same. I also took her to Sacramento to the California State Railroad Museum one Wednesday. She loves trains and was so happy to be there. After that we had lunch and walked around Old Town Sacramento. It was a fun mommy daughter day. As a family we’ve enjoyed the free concerts in the park on Thursday nights in Concord. It’s so nice to bring a blanket and sit and chill and dance and have a good time. It’s been a fun summer!

Some Eliza gems from this month:

At the end of our walk around the neighborhood one evening, Eliza sat down on the curb and said “Let’s sit down and talk about our dreams.” She cracks me up.

Eliza’s after school greeting  one day: “I love New York. When I’m bigger we will go. I peed all over the place and it went into the potty.”

One time she was acting crazy and I was getting frustrated. I said, “Eliza, stop.” She said, “I never stop.”

July 2014 Part 1

July was the month of our first long road trip as a family. We drove from Concord all the way to Frisco, CO. The trip took 19 hours total but we were good about breaking it up and Eliza did great. We left on Sunday, June 29 around 2pm and it was Eliza’s naptime. She slept until we got to Reno where we got out and walked around the Silver Legacy casino and had dinner. Then we got back in the car and Eliza’s 7:30 bedtime approached and she fell asleep and stayed asleep until we got to Salt Lake City at 2am. Our friends Staci and Mike graciously let us stay at their house and it was so nice to have room to spread out and a kitchen for Eliza’s food.

We spent a couple of days in Salt Lake City. I had been before but Andy and Eliza hadn’t. We went to Temple Square, checked out downtown and visited with a couple of friends of mine who live there. We also drove to Park City and Eliza took her first gondola ride with me while Andy had fun sliding down a mountain. They had a lot of fun stuff to do even though there was no snow.

After a few days in Salt Lake City we headed to Colorado. That was about an 8 hour drive and we were happy to get there and see our friends Angie and Greg. The town of Frisco was so cute and quaint and the mountains surrounding it were just beautiful. They had a 4th of July parade and then a band played after that and we stayed to listen and had fun. Then we came home before it started raining and spent the rest of the day indoors playing games and having fun. The next day was Founders Day and they had donkey rides so Eliza was SO excited to ride a donkey through Frisco. We also went and checked out Breckenridge and that was a cute little town too.

Riding a donkey through downtown Frisco(click to see video)

Eliza just LOVED being on vacation and every day she woke up excited and said “What are we going to do today?” She also kept telling us that she didn’t want to go home. At one point after we left Reno on our way to SLC she was staring out the window for a long time. I wasn’t sure what was going on so I asked “Eliza, are you ok?” and she said “Yes, I’m just so happy.” It made me so happy to see that she loves traveing just as much as Andy and I do. It was a great trip and I am so glad that we did it. She was SO GOOD on the drive and only got crabby literally the last 5 minutes of the trip, right before we got home.

June 2014

Eliza has really started to test her limits and run wild. She’s stuck close by us all of this time but now she’s all over the place! She’s getting into more things destroying the house. We’ve started to refer to her as the whirling dervish.

On June 12 I was downstairs reading a book during her nap time and all of a sudden she appeared right next to me. It completely freaked me out because I heard no noise on the baby monitor that was sitting right next to me. I asked how she got down her and she told me that she climbed out of her crib. I thought that maybe it was a fluke and would give her one more chance but she did it again the next morning so we decided to take the rail off of her crib and make it a big girl bed. She is fine sleeping in her bed at night but she plays a lot during her naptime. Sigh. I guess it could be worse.

Earlier in June I attempted potty training. She was really asking for it and seemed really into it. I put the potty out in the morning and she sat right down on it and pooped. Right then! And then she was amazed and kept talking about how big her poop was. Haha! But then as the day wore on I could tell she was getting less and less into it. I had planned to have her naked all day but she asked for a shirt. Then she wanted to put on her panties or a diaper but I was trying to keep her free so I could see when things were happening. At the end of the day she had peed on the floor 5 times and pooped on the potty once.

Day 2 of potty training was my last. She refused to drink water because she figured out that  it would make her pee. She bit me on the arm and stabbed me multiple times with her plastic forks. And then she informed me that potty training was over right before she peed on the floor and maniacally laughed. She won. I was done. We will try again soon.

It has been so much fun watching her personality come out and seeing the things that she comes up with. One weekend she came across a picture of me when I was pregnant with her. Then she insisted that she was pregnant with her favorite stuffed animal dog and I had to put him back her tummy in every time he fell out.

One evening we went for a walk with her stuffed dog and even had to stop numerous times while he pooped on the grass. She really loves dogs and finally started naming some of her dogs this month. Her one dog that she has had for over a year is named Raisin. And the dog that she won at the Alameda County Fair is named Seamus.
Cute little sayings:

On our way to the Alameda County Fair, Eliza has informed us that she would like to see the “horsepigs” and ride a bunny.

Says “It’s strong for me” when something is too heavy for her

May 2014

Eliza continues to be little miss independent. We love watching her personality come out. She chooses her clothes and hairstyle and is very adamant and will not wear something unless she wants to wear it. All of her clothes are acceptable so I don’t argue and just let her wear what she wants. We will see what happens in the winter when she wants to wear summer clothes but she’s good for now. Mostly she wants to wear dresses and skirts. She is very girly. She also loves wearing princess dresses. We went to a new place called Small Talk Family Cafe and they had lots of toys and costumes for kids to play with and every few minutes she would put on a new princess dress. She loved it and asks to go back there all the time. We do go on occasion but not every day.

May was also the month that Eliza stopped going to daycare. She gets to go to Andy’s Montessori school for free so we decided that since I was working from home, I’d keep her home with me full time for about 3 months until she was ready to start at Andy’s school in July. Her last day at Bridget’s was May 15. It was fun to have her home with me and we did a lot of fun stuff!

We took a ferry over to Marin twice. Once to visit with some friends and once to see our niece, Eliza’s cousin Siena, in the play Annie. Eliza just loved riding BART and then taking the ferry across the bay. It was s uch a fun adventure for her and I loved watching her excitment.

I took her to get a pedicure at a place called Little Fairy Princess Girls Spa and she loved it. It was her first pedicture and she chose purple, her favorite color, for her toemails. She also got her face painted “like a princess.” There is a kids amusement park in Concord called Pixieland and I took her there one day too and she loved it. She had a pass for unlimited rides for 2 hours and she drove a car, rode in a plane, and rode in the spinning cups over and over again. Too bad the train wasn’t working that day or she would have ridden that one too.

There was a Kid’s Fest in Concord on Memorial Day weekend and they had ponies to ride and Eliza rode her first pony! Normally she is a little timid about going on rides but she just walked right up to the pony and got on and loved it. Given her love for dogs, cats and horses, I really think she is going to be an animal person.

Eliza sayings this month:

I’m not a lady. I’m a gentlemint!

Eliza told me one morning “I don’t want to watch Good Morning America, I want to watch Good Night America.”

Eliza: I want some fruit.
Me: Ok, what do you want? We have strawberries, oranges, apples and watermelon.
Eliza: No, I don’t want any of that. I want fruit! (breaks into tears).
